Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)

Probably the most common and well-known hawk in North America, Red-tailed Hawks are often seen perched on power poles and in trees along roadways or soaring overhead hunting small animals.  The broad wings, mottled belly, and wide brick-red tail are a dead giveaway for this species.  Red-tails are found in almost every habitat type and with that comes a wide variation in coloration.
