This migrant is most commonly seen in the winter months, nesting in the far northern latitudes of North America. Rough-legged Hawks are most known for their broad wings (slightly longer and narrower than other broad-winged hawks), prominent bands on their tails, and feathered legs. They commonly come in light and dark morphs, which may throw beginning birders for a loop. Like the Red-tailed Hawk, you will likely see Rough-legged Hawks perched on trees and power poles in search of small rodents and birds.
